Reverse has photographer’s imprint for T. P. COLLINS…WESTFIELD, MASS. Flavel King Sheldon was born in Southampton, Massachusetts on December 12, 1831. He was listed as a 31 year old farmer when he enlisted as a Sergeant on August 8, 1862 in Company D, 37th Massachusetts Infantry. The 37th was assigned to the 6th Corps of the Army of the Potomac and served with that organization throughout its service. During its time with the army the regiment lost 4 officers and 257 enlisted men killed in action and died of disease.Sheldon was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on June 27, 1864 and 1st Lieutenant on March 4, 1865. He was wounded in the final assault on Petersburg on April 2, 1865 and was discharged for disability on June 17, 1865.

After the war he was an active member of the W. L. Baker Post #86 of the GAR in Northampton, Mass. He died on November 24, 1909 and is buried in Center Cemetery, Southampton, Massachusetts.
